- Printhead Technology: The ZT231 utilizes a Flat Head mechanism. The AP6088 wax-resin formulation matches this perfectly, yielding razor-sharp text and dense, scannable barcodes on thick hang tag stocks.
- Ink Direction (Wind Direction - Critical Difference): Unlike the ZT411 (which takes CSI), the Zebra ZT231 natively and exclusively supports CSO (Ink-Coated Side OUT / Outside Wind) ribbons. When ordering your AP6088 supply, make sure to explicitly request the CSO / Outside Wind variant.

Because clothing hang tags consist of rigid cardstock (typically 200gsm to 350gsm) and rely on physical markers rather than gaps for alignment, you must optimize your ZT231 configuration:
- Media Type Selection: In the ZT231 color touchscreen menu or the Windows print driver, change the Media Type to Non-Continuous. Then, choose either Mark (if using a black bar on the back) or Notch/Web (if using a punched hole or side cutout).
- Align the Moveable Sensor: Open the printer cover and slide the lower media sensor (identifiable by its yellow adjustment clip) so it sits directly in the path of your tag’s black mark or alignment hole.
- Increase Darkness Setting: Cardstock absorbs heat and ink differently than thin labels. To ensure the AP6088 wax-resin blend bonds permanently, increase the Darkness setting to a mid-to-high range (approx. 15 to 22). This prevents the print from looking faded or scraping off during shipping.

When printing raw cardstock tags, the AP6088 ribbon width must always be wider than the tag itself. For example, if your hang tag is 50mm wide, you must use at least a 60mm ribbon. If the tag is wider than the ribbon, the sharp, exposed cardboard edges will scrape directly across the bare ZT231 printhead, permanently scratching the heating elements and ruining it.
